Melone mantovano IGP

Of uncertain origin, it spread throughout Italy during the Roman Empire, but a recent discovery proves the presence of seeds in Sardinia during the Bronze Age. Messisbugo recounts that it was widespread in city gardens and the countryside. It is successfully cultivated throughout the Ferrara area, and the areas of Bondeno, Sant'Agostino and Centese fall within the Mantua Melon PGI area. It is eaten in slices, often paired with ham or, better still, with Zia Ferrarese cheese.
