Asparago Verde di Altedo IGP

The asparagus probably originated in Mesopotamia and was subsequently spread throughout the Mediterranean basin by the ancient Egyptians (who depicted it as early as 3000 BC in their friezes). It was highly appreciated by the ancient Romans, who encouraged its cultivation throughout the Empire and who are said to have even launched ships specifically for its transport. It is mentioned in ‘De re coquinaria’ (1st century AD), one of the oldest cookery books to have survived to the present day. The entire province of Ferrara is included in the production area of Altedo Green Asparagus, which is highly sought after for its refined flavour.
