Comacchio salt

Since ancient times, Comacchio has been one of the major suppliers of salt to northern Italy, so much so that the salt flats were often the subject of disputes with Venice and Ravenna. In 1979, the area was designated a wildlife sanctuary, and production ceased in 1984. Since 2016, a salt pan has been operational and open to visitors, where the CADF, the Municipality, and the Po Delta Park—in collaboration with the Comacchio Salt Workers—oversee the processing and harvesting of “white gold.”
